What if Artificial Intelligence could boost the economy? [Study]

AI will destroy jobs, robots will replace humans … That’s what we often hear when we talk about the evolution of AI and the rise of robots. But what if Artificial Intelligence could actually boost the economy?

We recently conducted a study with Censuswide and asked around 1000 British citizens how they felt about AI and its impact on the automation of their calendar management tasks. One interesting thing to notice is that 47% of professionals in the UK would be interested in using Artificial Intelligence powered assistants to gain time. And how would they spend the time they saved? By going shopping or making love! Great news, right?

How to build Empathy in AI?

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend and speak at AI Europe in London.

Lots of interesting and passionate debates on the evolution of AI. I want to get back to a question I was asked and I tried to answer during my keynote speech: How will Virtual Assistants impact the Internet and, on a larger scale, Society as a whole?

First, it’s important to define what we mean when we talk about virtual assistant based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). We are mainly influenced by science-fiction movies, and we all have our own fantasies about what our lives could look like with an assistant like « HER », capable of achieving every task we ask of her, and in the end, become a part of our daily life, and even a close friend!

Chatbots are taking over in the financial field and they act as personalized bank advisors or virtual piggy banks.

 

Recent advancements in AI have lead to the rise in Chatbots. These conversational agents are able to have written or spoken communication with humans and provide access to a large number of services. Whether you are booking a flight with the help of Alexa, Amazon Echo’s voice-enabled virtual assistant or ordering yourself an Uber using Siri, Apple’s intelligent personal assistant, it’s all possible nowadays. This technology is beginning to expand in the banking sector. In fact, there is a rise in chatbots that promise a better customer service experience, quicker transactions or an assistance to spendthrifts so they can save money regularly.

How NLP gave birth to Julie

To automatically understand client requests found in emails, Julie relies on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, in particular, Natural Language Processing (NLP). NLP is a subfield of AI that deals with various problems ranging from text comprehension to text generation.

Early applications in NLP focused on machine translation, as evidenced by the Georgetown-IBM experiment (1954) which aimed to automatically convert about sixty sentences from Russian to English. In this experiment, the translation problem was solved using 6 grammatical rules and a set of 250 lexical items.
